Hi, elly, welcome to the forum.

No, you don't need a merchant account to use PayPal - in fact, that's one reason a lot of people use PayPal.

For most of your questions, you'd get the best information by going to the PayPal website. The way the money gets to your bank account depends partly on what country you're in; if you're in the U.S., you have more options than people in some other countries, but PayPal should have information on this.

A number of people who use both CSB and PayPal have simply used PayPal's own shopping cart set-up on their sites and have found it to work well.

Each shopping cart is different for the implementation. If the one you are working with has a forum, that is your best source of info on that topic.  For example, ZenCart has an extensive forum to answer questions like that.

As to paypal and merchant.... For a couple customer's sites we use paypal on a (without a shopping cart) for payment of merchandise and/or services.  The paypal button triggers a separate page (on paypal site, but designed to look like the referring site) to open. I have defined the paypal function to work with the appropriate checking account. Customer pays for merchandise with Paypal or credit card and that amount minus a processing fee is deposited in the checking account. No separate merchant service agreement is needed as it is part of the paypal arrangement.

Yes.  Open an account with paypal, to accept credit card payments, you must have a VERIFIED account.  In other words it must be tied to a real in the world checking account.

Once you have done that you can go to your profile and set up website payment preferences (will accept payments from Credit cards, not from this country, only in this currency, assign a page on your own website to send your customers after a sale, and much more).

NO...No merchant account needed when you go this route!!!

From the paypal site:
  • Start accepting payments today--no approval or shopping cart required
  • Customers shop on your website and pay you on PayPal, even without a PayPal account
  • No annual commitment required
  • No monthly, startup, or cancellation fees
  • Optional: Accept credit cards via phone, fax, mail, or in person (monthly fees apply)*

They have 4 programs (compared here). You will probably want the website payments standard program to get started, then maybe move to the PRO version.  I have set up the STANDARD for a couple sites.  More info about it here.   Technical overview is on this page.

Best source for information about paypal is at paypal not on this forum.  They have documented TONS of stuff.  Just keep clicking links and you will learn so much!!  On the technical page, choose a Scenario (you do, or do not need a shopping cart, etc) to learn more about YOUR situation.  There's also a button to START NOW to get you signed up for business account.

Yes, If you're thinking of selling with PayPal the best thing is to do a lot of reading on their site, where you'll probably find things you haven't even thought to ask questions about. I don't think you'll find anyone here who has experience with using a Paypal account from Fiji.  And their system does have some differences depending on what country you're in.

I'll just offer one hint that sometimes gets overlooked. If you're nervous about giving your checking account information online, set up a separate account at your bank that you use just for PayPal and give them the information they need to access that account. But, there, too, the rules might vary depending on what country you're in - such as the amount you have to keep in the account, etc. There are some countries where the only way they'll pay you is by actually sending you a check. Do some clicking and reading on their site to see what's true for where you live.

You can try cart alternatives like:
    https://www.fospace.com/FOSsellstuff.htm
    http://www.elbowspace.com/ELBglossary.htm
They seem to work by using a script to calculate the cart totals
on the same page. Your customer selects all of their products on
one page. No suffling back and forth between server & client.
